Four Key Zones

Nutrition

Research has clearly shown that there is a connection between the food we eat and our risk of developing chronic conditions such as Obesity, Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Disease and a number of other conditions. Attaining and maintaining a healthy diet can help to prevent the onset of chronic conditions and/or can help to delay the onset of complications in people who have an existing chronic lifestyle associated disease. Adopting a healthy balanced and nutrient dense diet is a critical component necessary to ensure success in health management.

Exercise

The connection between inactivity and an increased risk of developing chronic disease is well recognized in Lifestyle medicine and has been identified by the World Health Organization as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality (6% of deaths globally). People who live active lives tend to have a reduced risk of developing chronic disease states like Obesity, Hypertension, Diabetes, Heart disease, as well as a number of other conditions. Incorporating regular physical activity involving bodily movement and done as part of playing, working, active transportation, house chores, recreational activities into your daily routine for 30 minutes is fundamentally important when pursuing a healthy lifestyle.

Sleep

Adequate sleep, and identifying factors that may be interfering with a healthy sleep routine, is another key component of attaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, insufficient sleep has been linked to the development, and subsequently, the management of a number of chronic diseases and conditions that lead to premature death and illness, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression. It is important to get the recommended 7-8 hours of sleep each night required to maintain health and prevent disease.

Outer Circle LifeZones: Factors that Influence your Ability to Live a Healthy LifeStyle.

Multiple factors can affect your ability to implement the four key components necessary for attaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. These factors can be related to environmental causes or may be affected by intrinsic characteristics.

Environmental factors that impact one’s ability to implement and maintain a healthy lifestyle include: Occupation (such as night shift work, desk job), Life Events (such as a death in the family, birth of a baby, moving, divorce or separation, changing jobs), environmental stresses (such as tight deadlines, relationship conflict, inadequate social support systems).

Inherent characteristics that can influence one’s ability to attain and maintain healthy behaviors include: feelings of self-efficacy, one’s sense of emotional well-being, mindfulness, and one’s ability to cope with and manage situational stress. Addictive tendencies may also impact one’s ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Thus, identifying individual susceptibility is vital to ensuring success in managing your health.

Additionally, lifestyle habits can either promote healthy behaviors or sabotage them. It is important to identify and alleviate personal habits that may be sabotaging your goals, as well as reinforce those that are promoting your health goals.
