Obesity greatly increases the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, sleeping disorders, mood disorders including depression, and mobility issues. Obesity counseling is a preventive service now covered under the Affordable Care Act.
Obesity, which is recognized by the American Medical Association as a disease, is defined by a person’s BMI (Body Mass Index)–or the correlation between their weight and their height. Just because someone is not technically obese does not mean they can’t benefit from a comprehensive weight management program. For many people, losing just 5% – 10% of their body weight can significantly reduce their risk of various diseases and other health issues.
If you are concerned that your weight may be becoming a health issue, below are some symptoms to be on the lookout for.
- High blood pressure
- Difficulty exercising
- Shortness of breath
- Sleep apnea
- Depression or mood swings
- Back pains
- Chest pains
- Pregnancy complications
Lifestyle Medical Center’s multi-disciplinary team of doctors, registered dietitians, nurse practitioners, and PhD-level outcomes researchers are experts in the fields of weight loss and obesity counseling. We will develop an individualized evidence-based lifestyle modification and nutrition plan. At each visit, we will use our state-of-the-art body composition analysis tools to determine how much weight you have lost, taking into account the relative percentage of body fat and muscle build.
LifeStyle Medical Center uses several different approaches to achieve weight loss. Some specific diet approaches include very low-calorie diets, the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, calorie-controlled diets, carbohydrate counting and nutrition exchanges. However, because effective weight loss has to be based on sustainable, long-term lifestyle changes, we work with our clients to develop a strategy focused on your specific needs and circumstances.
At this time, LifeStyle Medical Center is in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, Blue Value, Aetna and Coventry (excluding Duke plans).
† Results may vary from patient to patient. Rapid weight loss may be associated with certain medical conditions and should only be considered by those who are medically appropriate.[/ezcol_2third_end]
